The University of Coimbra (UC) is a reference institution in higher education and research in Portugal. The Faculty of Sciences and Technology (FCTUC) includes the Department of Informatics Engineering (DEI), and explores its knowledge transfer and scientific potential through Pedro Nunes Institute (IPN), the 2011 Best Science-Based Incubator. The Centre for Informatics and Systems of the UC (CISUC) is a large research centre in the field of Informatics and Communications. CISUC’s SSE group has been working with software dependability and security, mainly from the perspective of assurances by means of experimental evaluation and benchmarking. This includes the development of techniques such as fault injection, vulnerability and attack injection, and trustworthiness benchmarking. The SSE group is also well-known by its record in creation of spin-off companies, started by former PhD students as consequence of previous EC projects. The three most prominent examples of such SSE spin-off companies are Critical Software SA (http://www.criticalsoftware.com), Wit Software (https://www.wit-software.com), Feedzai (http://feedzai.com), which are now well established companies that currently employ more than 2000 engineers.
